Just a Taste of No More Heroes 2 Desperate Struggle

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

I wasn’t sure if I was going to run out and buy this, but who was I kidding!?  I’m a big fan of the first game, and have been anxious for the 2nd.

No More Heroes is a game with an insane 4th wall breaking story, but one that I can follow, and is told well enough; a stark contrast to coming off Bayonetta.  Despite its vulgarity, the first NMH showed off some real thought behind its madness; and I’m expecting the same on this go.  The VO is sometimes hammy, but somehow feels appropriate.  Travis still has the same voice actor, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m only about 2 hours in, but there is a much better pace to the game already.  Some technical flaws here and there with the camera, but the absurd, meta story is in full effect, and the combat is still fun with a few new surprises thrown in, and I’m sure many more to come.

I don’t miss the open world at all, and the 8bit mini games that replace the tedious jobs of the first game are fantastic!  They are much more developed than expected.  There are plenty of distractions in Travis’s apartment as well, though I feel a bit weird playing with Travis’s cat when my sleepy one is across the couch from me.

The first level feels shorter than the ones in the original, they seem to have trimmed the fat, and focused more on the boss fights.  This is a plus, as the fodder in each level is more of an appetizer to the main course at the end.

The animation and character models, especially Travis, all seem to be updated, and have a little more care towards detail.  A few technical issues still hold over, but its already clear that Suda51 listened to people’s complaints and really delivered for his fans.

Wii Sports Resort: Archery

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Wii Motion Plus….I guess its pretty cool, new technology doesn’t necessarily lead to better games, but I’m verily enjoyed playing archery in Wii Sports 2.  The game was simple and fun, and demanded that I actually pulled the controller like a real bow, extending my left arm taut.  (my arms are too big for that cord to get a full extend =[ )

Wii Motion Plus felt really faithful, and the archery event did a great job of masking the recalibration.  The only time things got weird in the game were when I rotated left or right to aim for the SECRET objects, I ended up physically aiming away from the TV but still…staring at the TV.  I suppose I could adjust by registering off screen first if I know which way I’m going to turn.

At the end of the day, I still feel like I like games with buttons, but Wii Sports 2 has some nice games that do more than waggle.  I do want me some archery, but not enough to buy the whole suite of games, and even with the Motion Plus, I’m skeptical of how much good usage it will get with future games.

Zelda Next Year…

fullzelda

I’m not that excited for this…I’d like to be…but my hope that the series will evolve is fading.  Twilight Princess was fun, but far from fresh.  Though, even if they had announced this, I’m not sure it would have helped my opinion of Nintendo’s press conference.

Impressions and Sad News: Muramasa Demonblade for Wii!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I recently got a short hands one with the beautiful import title, Muramasa Demonblade for the Wii.  It’s from the same people that brought you Odin Sphere on PS2, and uses a similar style of gorgeous sprite based animation.

Muramasa is definitely more action based than its predecessor, but the simplicity with which the combat plays out has a real grace to it.  Using only the A button and directional inputs on the analog stick, I got a large variety of moves, and satisfaction out of the fluid onscreen action.  My only hope is that as the game progresses, the combat becomes deeper, rewarding the player for taking advantage of the combat system.  The few badguys I encountered were fairly easily disposed of, and the boss (not sure if it was a boss..but it was big) was fairly forgiving.

There were a few functions that I was unsure of (I think an ability to swap swords?), as the tutorial and story were relayed in text bubbles entirely in Japanese.  I’ve avoided reading about the story, and aside from the trailer, this has been my first real dive into how this game is turning out.  I’m excited to try it when if  it comes out stateside.

Unfortunately Kotaku has reported that the American publisher has dropped it.  Here’s to hoping someone picks it up instead of letting it linger in publishing limbo.  I don’t know that I could bring myself to GameFAQs my way through this import.  Out of the 3 games I was looking forward to this year for my Wii, 2 (Fatal Frame IV being the other)  of them are currently up in the air as to their local release….its a sad day for the hardcore with Nintendo…

So…Its Like Polo… But With Murder… Madworld Initial Impressions

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

So Madworld snuck out…I knew it was just around the corner, but I got overwhelmed elsewhere.  Luckily, I snagged the last copy at my local Best Buy.  I’ve had a lot of hope for this game, as it looks fantastic and is one of those rare mature titles actually coming out on the Wii.  It is a hope amongst the hardcore that the mini game festival will give way if this game is successful…  Historically, Okami and my favorite No More Heroes were supposed to help developers realize that there is a hardcore audience on the Wii.  I’m not necessarily looking for more violent games, but more specifically meatier.

With that said, I popped in Madworld, and was greeted by its fantastic graphic style.  This came as no surprise, and to address the concern that it may be too busy and hard to read, rest your fears and dive right in!

The controls are not gimmicky, and you are eased into them by way of a fun tutorial.  The action is responsive, and the  setup keeps you looking around for new toys to slay your enemies with.  This is key to breaking up the otherwise monotonous action; the violence remains fresh!  The game encourages you to find new ways to kill people and combo them up, or take advantage of the special kill events as the hillarious announcers egg you on or chide you for being lazy.  The more you put in and challenge yourself, the more fun you will have.

Mega Man 9: Impressions

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

So I caved and downloaded Mega Man 9 for the Wii, and so far I’m happier with it than I thought I would be!  They put an achievement system on it!, but when it hits the 360 I’ll switch to playing it there.  The game is difficult, but fair, but seeing speedrun listed on the achievements(beat the game in under an hour) and already playing a bit, I can see how speed runs are possible, and though difficult, I’m learning the stages quick and never feeling cheated into a death.  The music is great so far, it tends to feel a bit funkier leaning towards the music of 3 and 4.  Later this week I’ll hopefully have more to say.
